First Action Building Services provides professional consumer unit replacement, fuse board replacement and electrical upgrades for homeowners, landlords, letting agents and commercial clients throughout London.
As an NICEIC Approved Contractor with 30 years of experience, we can assess your existing electrical installation and recommend the appropriate consumer unit and protective devices for your property.
Consumer Unit & Fuse Board Replacement
The consumer unit, sometimes referred to as the fuse board or fuse box, is an important part of your electrical installation. It distributes electricity around the property and contains protective devices designed to disconnect circuits when electrical faults occur.
Modern consumer units can incorporate RCBOs, RCDs, AFDDs (Arc Fault Detection Devices) and Surge Protective Devices (SPDs), depending on the installation and its requirements.
If you have an older fuse board, we can inspect and test the installation and advise whether replacing or upgrading the consumer unit would improve electrical safety and protection.
An older fuse board does not automatically mean that the installation is unsafe or that it must be replaced. Its condition, protective devices, existing wiring and the results of appropriate electrical testing should all be considered.
When Should You Consider a Consumer Unit Upgrade?
You may wish to have your consumer unit assessed if:
- You still have an older fuse box with rewireable fuses
- Your installation has limited or inadequate RCD protection
- The consumer unit shows signs of damage or deterioration
- You are experiencing electrical faults or repeated tripping
- An EICR has identified issues with the existing consumer unit or electrical installation
- You are carrying out significant electrical alterations or adding new circuits
- Your existing consumer unit no longer has sufficient capacity for your requirements
- You require additional protection such as RCBOs, AFDDs or surge protection
We can inspect and test the installation and advise on the most appropriate solution.
Modern Consumer Unit Protection
Depending on the installation, type of premises and circuit requirements, a modern consumer unit may incorporate:
- RCBO protection – providing individual circuit protection against overcurrent and earth leakage
- RCD protection – providing additional protection against electric shock
- AFDDs (Arc Fault Detection Devices) – designed to detect potentially dangerous electrical arcing that conventional protective devices may not detect
- Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) – providing protection against transient overvoltages
- Circuit breakers and appropriate protective devices
- Main isolation switch
- Clearly identified circuit labelling
- Appropriate provision for additional circuits
The appropriate protective devices will be selected according to the electrical installation and current requirements.
AFDD – Arc Fault Detection Device Protection
Arc Fault Detection Devices are designed to identify certain types of dangerous electrical arcing that may occur because of damaged cables, loose connections or other faults.
An AFDD monitors the electrical characteristics of a circuit and can disconnect the supply when potentially dangerous arc-fault conditions are detected.
AFDD requirements depend on the type of premises, circuit and installation, so they are not automatically required on every circuit in every property.
Where AFDD protection is required or appropriate for the particular installation, First Action Building Services can install suitable AFDD or combined AFDD/RCBO devices as part of a consumer unit installation or electrical upgrade.
Surge Protection (SPD)
Surge Protective Devices can help protect electrical installations and connected equipment from transient overvoltages caused by events such as switching operations or disturbances on the electrical supply.
Where appropriate, an SPD can be incorporated into the consumer unit as part of an upgrade.
Inspection & Testing
A consumer unit replacement is more than simply changing the fuse box.
Before and during the work, appropriate inspection and testing is required to assess the existing installation and ensure that circuits being connected to the new consumer unit are suitable and safe.
If faults or defects are identified, we will explain the findings and advise you of any remedial work required.
Electrical Certification
Following the installation and successful inspection and testing, the appropriate electrical certification will be provided.
Where Building Regulations notification is applicable, the relevant compliance documentation will also be provided.
As an NICEIC Approved Contractor, First Action Building Services carries out consumer unit replacements professionally and in accordance with the applicable electrical requirements.
